This Place, Sophie Mallett, 2017

‘This Place’ draws from local geology, texts on island evolution, migration and economic theory to create a semi-fictionalised town that has been condemned to replay boom and bust cycles in perpetuity.

The work is based on research undertaken on residency in Margate, but it draws on concurrent and past histories of gentrification from other towns and cities, both in the UK and abroad.

Filmed exclusively on the Kent coast it centres on the real geological histories of a migratory species from Northern Europe that thrived exclusively in the local area. This species becomes the precedent for all further migration to the region; exploring the growth and decay necessary to the neoliberal project.
