The City of Tomorrow, Lilian Kreutzberger, 2014

The City of Tomorrow is a horizontal facade placed at the Socrates Sculpture park in Queens, following the grid of Manhattan. The grid-like facade appears to have recently toppled from across the river, now bleached of all details. The white sprawling installation replicates the 20th century “wonder” – the modern skyscraper Time and Life by architect Wallace Harrison. The experience of navigating through New York midtown buildings like this one that have plaza’s or ground floor POPS, Privately Owned Public Space, reminded me of the experience of the1967 movie Playtime main character. By replicating the ground floor of the Time and Life building I wanted to allow the visitors to anew experience the volumes they encounter daily now in an more abstract way. People can sit or walk on the facade to discover the human scale.
