The plate being a plate, Thomas Knopper, 2016

As a human being, I tend to learn things and forget them as time passes. The meaning of practical objects quickly changes when they are used routinely, for they become part of a kind of automatism; their presence in a household becomes axiomatic. Reversing this process is what interests me. If I were to end the routine of mindless, daily use and focus instead on the change and expiration of the intrinsic meaning of the quality of objects, I would become aware and feel the possible power they wield. With my work ‘The plate being a plate’ I reveal a dialogue with the non-self-explanatory being of a plate. I freely improvise, as I dissect its original function and shape it back into an original creation.
