Home has always represented society backbone. A spatial markers, a basis to return to, a place of care and inclusion. Nevertheless, an economic system based on pervasive instability and mobility, and an housing market dominated by real estate speculation have managed to challenge and destabilize the traditional understanding of living and belonging. In the words of Akhil Gupta and James Ferguson, we as people today happen to live in a generalized condition of homelessness. Home becomes a place of transit, a pay by the hour room, with increasingly small dimensions. A disposable space, where the social dimension is lost in favor of economic valorisation. But if autonomy seems to be the exclusive domain of a few, instability becomes a starting point from which to develop themselves, regardless the context. Thus questioning atavist concepts as property, permanence, and belonging.
What is home? What does it mean to belong? What relationships develop among individuals? And what relationships with objects?
The aim of homeawayfromhome is to create an open-ended online platform that aims at reflecting on the conceptual and material elements of home. For this reason, it is asked to participants to produce or donate an artwork that engages with the topic of living and belonging, so to build over time an inclusive and polyphonic narrative.
